What is social harmony to you??

"Happiness is when what you think, what you say and what you do are in harmony"

                                          -Mahatma Gandhi

what if you are rich, healthy and successful but you lack harmony in your life? Will you have a contented life? Well if you ask me , my answer will be a BIG NO. How can we live in a society which lacks harmony?? Now talking about social harmony, it can be in various forms and dimensions. Social harmony means to share, value and express love, fraternity, peace, respect, admiration and equity to other people regardless of their origin, religion, sex, race, physique, career, choices or financial status.

Discussing about Indian society, the very first idea that strikes my mind is differences due to religion .In secular country like India it is our foremost responsibility to respect every religion. We should have utmost good faith and respect for other's culture and religious belief. Despite the secular and religiously tolerant constitution of India there had been numerous cases of religious violence in India. In the recent Delhi riots which began on 23 February 2020, hundreds were wounded and 53 people were killed. I don't think that these demises had been beneficiary for any religion. Perhaps we should endeavour to acknowledge, understand and respect every religion.

Social harmony is a sequel of personal harmony, so if we don't have personal harmony, we will definitely fail to accomplish social harmony. Personal harmony begins right at our home. Being peaceful at home will ultimately result in affable behaviour outside. One must be satisfied with what he / she has in her life. Indeed , we should have a pragmatic admiration for others but it should not act as a hurdle in our jovial lifestyle.

Personal harmony further is an interweave of various aspects such as economic harmony and conflict of opinions. Contentment to a large extent is a philosophical term as we all are humans and we always aspire for more. But these aspirations should not turn into loathing and jealousy for anyone.

In democracy we are gifted with a lot of freedom and in a diverse country like India people have different sets of opinion and choices. We are no one to condemn anyone's choice in clothing, career or lifestyle. Our ethos must be apprehensive to other's choices and opinions.Dignity of the LGBT community should also be maintained as we are aware of the fact that Supreme court of India invalidated part of section 377 and legalised homosexuality in India.

Above mentioned idea of social harmony is my personal belief and it might be vague for you. I also believe that social harmony cannot be defined by an individual and it can have more dimensions but it is crucial for everyone to interpret social harmony. As we very well know that every drop counts so it is the responsibility of every member of our society to work on their principles of social harmony and make our society more integrated.
